What databases can I use to find information on a topic? How are they organized?
Answer
The HCC Libraries subscribe to many different databases that contain a large variety of information in different formats: written articles in magazines or academic journals, still images, or even streaming video. The key to understanding library databases is that they organize a certain set of information in a certain way. This organization is what makes them powerful. The database that will work best for you will depend very much on the type of information and your ultimate goal. Ask a librarian for help if you need it.
We organize our databases in many different ways. Because each database has a specific name, you can use our A-Z List of Databases to look for the database. You can choose from the "Subject" drop-down menu for a specific subject (use "Multi-subject" for our larger, general databases) or from the "Type" drop-down menu for a certain format of information.
All HCC databases are accessible from home, but access is limited to HCC students, faculty, and staff. When you click a link to an HCC Library database from off-campus, you will be taken to a login page where you need to enter your HCC "W" number (for students) or your first and last names (for faculty/staff) and personal password. Once you've done this and successfully authenticated, you are redirected to the database.
Remember that you can always contact the HCC libraries by choosing a location from here: https://library.hccs.edu/libraries/home or by using any of the methods found at https://hccs.libanswers.com/
