The word journal is often synonymous with magazine but sometimes they have distinct meanings. Generally, a journal will be academic in scope, where a magazine will have a non-academic audience in mind, whether popular or professional.

There are several different kinds of journals that libraries might have, either in print or via databases:

  • Scholarly journals
  • Trade or professional magazines
