The books are cataloged using the Library of Congress classification system. The Library of Congress explains that it was "developed in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to organize and arrange the book collections of the Library of Congress." Many academic institutions, including Houston Community College, have adopted the system. Books on a given subject will cluster together. More details on those groupings, called Subject Headings, can be found at the link below.

Each book at HCC has a "call number" on its spine (side), which will help you locate where the book is located on the shelf. They are arranged alphanumerically. Ask for help at the library's circulation desk if you're having trouble finding a specific book.
